Overview

The KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory (KSL), in collaboration with ANSYS and its Apex Channel Partner for the Middle East, Fluid Codes (https://fluidcodes.com), invites you to attend the Twelfth KAUST–ANSYS Workshop, a four-day training focused on ANSYS Fluent and high-performance computing (HPC) using the Shaheen III Supercomputer. All participants will be eligible to take the CFD Certificate Exam and receive a participation certificate. The event is free of charge.

About ANSYS

ANSYS is a global leader in engineering simulation software, empowering users to virtually model and analyze the performance of products under real-world conditions — from fluid flow and heat transfer to structural mechanics and electromagnetism. If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, driven a car, used a smartphone, or crossed a bridge, chances are ANSYS software contributed to its design.

Workshop Theme

Theme: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and HPC Applications

Objectives

• Engage industrial partners and academic researchers in simulation and HPC practices.
• Strengthen engineering simulation education for students and professionals.
• Promote Saudi industry collaboration through advanced CFD workflows on Shaheen III.

Program Highlights

Day 1 – Ansys Fluent Basics

The workshop begins with an overview of the Ansys–KAUST collaboration and an introduction to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using Ansys Fluent. The first day focuses on the foundations of CFD modeling, starting with geometry creation and manipulation in Ansys Discovery. Participants will then explore meshing techniques through lectures and a practical session on Fluent Meshing, followed by sessions on the CFD simulation workflow, including setup, boundary conditions, and the use of physical models. The day concludes with an open Q&A to review key concepts and prepare attendees for more advanced topics in the following sessions.

Day 2 – Advanced CFD Topics

The second day builds upon the fundamentals by introducing advanced aspects of CFD simulation. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in controlling solution parameters, implementing turbulence modeling, and conducting heat transfer analysis using Ansys Fluent. The sessions combine theory with guided workshops, ensuring that participants not only understand the principles but also apply them directly in simulation environments. The day concludes with an introduction to transient simulations, emphasizing time-dependent flow behavior, followed by a summary and discussion session.

Day 3 – Modern Simulation Tools

Day three transitions into modern simulation methodologies and the latest innovations in Ansys software. Participants will begin with a lecture on CFD best practices before exploring the capabilities of Ansys Discovery Live, a real-time simulation platform that accelerates design iteration and visualization. The program continues with demonstrations of the Fluent GPU Solver, enabling faster computations through high-performance hardware, and an introduction to PyFluent, a Python-based interface for automating CFD workflows. Later sessions focus on aerodynamic analysis using Ansys Fluent Aero and a presentation highlighting recent software updates. The day wraps up with an interactive Q&A to consolidate the lessons learned.

Day 4 – HPC and Shaheen Training

The final day is dedicated to bridging CFD simulations with high-performance computing (HPC) and advanced numerical techniques. It begins with lectures on numerical methods, code development, and parallel computing for engineers, providing a theoretical foundation for large-scale simulations. Participants then engage in a practical workshop demonstrating the complete simulation workflow from workstation to supercomputer, using the Shaheen III system at KAUST. The day concludes with the CFD certification exam, certificate distribution, and closing remarks, marking the culmination of four days of intensive training in CFD and HPC.

Who Should Attend

• KAUST students and researchers interested in modeling and simulation
• Saudi industry professionals aiming to scale CFD workloads on Shaheen
